Using Copper Spray Paint on Home Decor

Most of us have a favorite metal that we like to use to update home decor. For me copper spray paint is my go to warm up any room!

For some it’s oil rubbed bronze, gold, silver, brushed nickel, but for me it’s copper. I’m so in love with copper that I painted an accent wall in my Livingroom copper.

What is The Best Copper Spray Paint?

This is a hot topic for a lot of people. Which copper spray paint is the best? I’ve tried most of them and I have a few favorites like Krylon’s Brilliant Metallic, Rust-Oleum Metallic Copper, Rust-Oleum Universal Hammered Copper, and of course the Montana Copper is to die for! Today I’m using Valspar Metallic Copper which is beautiful and has a great textured feel.

They all have their own merits and color variations. You need to decide on which one you aesthetically like best. The quality of all are very good.

Let’s Spray Paint Some Copper!

I wanted to do a quick update on this candle stand. It’s been this dirty off white for a long time. It’s not the original color of this piece so it’s been updated once before but not by me. Now it was my turn to give it an update.

I made sure the entire surface was clean before I started. I always like to start with my spray paint projects upside down if I can. This is because I want the top, the part that everyone sees, to be perfect. If there are any drips while spraying the underside I can clean them away from the top before spraying the visible side.

Then it was time to spray. One of the things I like about the Valspar paint is the cap is built onto the can. You just twist it in place to spray, which is nice when you’re spraying on a really windy day. I can’t tell you how many caps I’ve had to chase across the yard!

It also has a comfortable spray head so you can spray for a long time without hurting your fingers.

As you can see there was some spitting from this can. I should have started off the project and then swept across the project. That mistake was on me. It’s a good thing I started on the underside!

Once the bottom was dry I flipped the candle holder over and painted the other side. The hardest part was getting in all the nooks and crannies on this piece.

So much better in the copper. I love how warm of a metallic copper is. Just the right amount of shine.

How to Use Liquid Sandpaper Paint Deglosser

If you have an aversion to sanding before painting you can always try liquid sandpaper or paint deglosser.

I’m so used to sanding my projects but I know that many of my readers have a strong aversion to it. I get it. Sanders are noisy and make a huge mess everywhere.

The results of not sanding though cannot be denied. If you don’t sand your paint will easily scratch and chip away.

So what is a DIYer to do?

Enter Liquid Sandpaper

Liquid sandpaper or paint deglosser is a solvent that softens the existing surface of your projects to help your new paint stick.

Let me show you how it works!

This little side table is the perfect table for liquid sandpaper. It doesn’t need any major work. The finish is in excellent condition aside from a dark area where someone had a candle sitting on it for too long. It’s not burned but it’s scorched. There’s no reason to sand this except that I wanted to give it a facelift.

I used Zinsser Paint Deglosser because it’s the brand I had on hand. There are other brands like Krud Kutter Gloss Off and Klean-Strip that work just as well.

Before you do anything make sure you are wearing proper protective gear. The fumes from these products are very toxic, highly flammable and not good for your skin. So I opted for the height of DIY fashion and put on my respirator and protective gloves. I also opened two windows in my home to vent the fumes. I was being as safe as I can be because we get one life.

The first thing you want to do is dampen a rag with the liquid sandpaper and go over the whole surface in a circular motion.

The surface starts to turn hazy almost immediately.

Even though it started to work right away you still want to grab a paint brush (I use a chip brush) and spread a thick layer of liquid sandpaper over the surface. And let it sit for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes the clear coat will be almost completely frosted or hazy looking. Now you are ready to paint. NO! You do not wipe the surface down first. I’ve received this questions a lot and I want to make sure we’re clear you can’t wipe it. It’s too sticky. Go directly to painting.

I coated mine with Zinsser B-I-N primer first to make sure all stains were blocked. I was particularly worried about that scorch mark and any dies from the candle that might be left behind. It’s my favorite primer because it works.

When you paint this coat you will feel the brush drag against the softened finish. Don’t panic that’s normal.

You need to paint your project within 1 hour of using liquid sandpaper so if you’re working on a large project like your kitchen cabinets make sure you work in sections that are manageable in that timeframe. Again I want to remind you that the fumes are very strong so it’s a trade off between the dust or regular sanding and the fumes of liquid sandpaper.

Painting Vinyl Furniture with Angelus Leather Paint

Many of you discovered this blog because of my Painted Leather boot s post. They were painted using Angelus Leather paint and they turn out amazing. When I bought the paint I also picked up their “hard” additive that treats the paint so it can be used on plastics or vinyl.

Oh you know I’m going to use it on furniture! So many vinyl seats that are still in good condition but just need a quick update.

Sure some of them can be easily upholstered (like the chairs I’m painting today) but others are more in-depth upholstery jobs that I just can’t tackle. That’s why I have to know if this paint works!

Painting Vinyl Furniture

I decided to try painting vinyl chairs by tackling something small first. Enter these two cafe chairs I picked up at a thrift store for $9 each.

Yes, I could easily reupholster these two but since I don’t know if the Angelus Leather paint will work on vinyl I wanted to start with a manageable project. Just in case.

For this makeover I decided to give these chair a gift box blue makeover. You know the gift box we’re talking about. If not here’s a hint (because we can’t say it).

That’s the one! I have an affinity for that color and that box (hint, hint to the hubby!).

To make the leather paint stick to vinyl you need to add Angelus Hard plastic adhesion promoter.

The directions state to mix 1 to 1 hardener and paint so after I poured the hardener into a baby food jar I poured my paint into the empty Hard bottle to make sure I was measuring the same amount.

I used a dowel to mix the two as thoroughly as I possibly could to make sure they were combined. Once that it was done it was time to start painting vinyl furniture!

The first coat laid down smooth. Angelus leather paint seems to be very high pigmented but I didn’t expect it to cover on the first coat. Going over a dark color with a lighter color usually doesn’t work that way. And I was right.

On the second coat I changed my brush direction. So on the first coat I went left to right and the next coat went up and down. This is a great method of filling in brush strokes and ensuring better coverage.

In the end it took four coats of paint to cover the dark green, but it was so worth it! Look at them!

I’m in love.

Yes, I did try to crack the paint. I pressed on the seat cushions repeatedly and it didn’t crack. It doesn’t feel sticky AT ALL! I was surprised by that. The Angelus Leather Paint laid down so smooth you can’t tell it was painted at all. It’s 5 stars for me!

How to Use Tintable Glaze on Furniture

Premixed glaze is so expensive that’s why when I found Modern Masters Tintable Glaze I was excited to try it. I hate paying $5 for a sample size and then it’s not even the right color. Using tintable glaze I could mix as much as I need, in the shade I want at a fraction of the cost of other glazes.

In this case, the glazes I found were not the color I wanted. I wanted to created a subtle movement of color on my project and not an aging glaze.

Mixing Tintable Glaze

There is surprisingly little information on how to mix tintable glazes also called scumble glazes in the art world. I think Modern Masters assumes that if you’re using this product you’re already and expert. That’s why is says “for the trained professional” on the bottom.

I’ve never let that stop me before so why stop now! I turned to my husband who is a professional artist. He clued me in to powdered pigments which he uses to tint his glazes. He’s such a great resource for me.

I decided on the Pearl Ex Series 2 collection because I loved al the color in it and could see me using all of them down the line. They do sell individual pots of color too but I wanted the variety.

Let’s Glaze Some Paint!

This is the piece I decided to use my tintable glaze on. It’s a music stand that someone had gutted so I converted it into a nightstand.

The first step was to remove all the loose veneer from the doors. Then I painted it in bubblegum pink chalk paint from Junk Gypsy called Gypsy Prom. It’s pretty but I wanted something more.

The scant information I did find said to make sure you use Tintable Glaze over a semi-gloss surface. If you put it over a matte finish the glaze would just soak in and not move at all which you don’t want. So I did clear coat this piece with semi-gloss and allowed it to dry.

The advice I was given by my husband was to fill a container with 1/4 of the amount of glaze I thought I would need. I completely over estimated the amount of glaze I thought I would need. A little goes a very long way! I needed about 2 ounces and I mixed 12.

Live and learn.

Then I added a few spoonful’s of the pink flamingo powdered pigments. I ended up using the whole pot of pink because I wanted a bright color. Then when I tested it on my project I decided I wanted a darker contrast and ended up adding two spoons of purple. You will probably need to fine toon your glaze too in order to achieve the look you want.

I would recommend (after my mistake) to pick a contrasting color. The pink just made it look like I darkened the paint instead of giving the color the movement I wanted.

Use a stick or a dowel to mix your pigments and glaze together. This doesn’t take too long. You just want to be sure there are no powder chunks in the glaze.

Time to Glaze

I used a figure 8 motion to cover the who cabinet. This give the finish a mottled look instead of straight lines across the piece. It give the color some movement and a softness that is very pretty.

The glaze stays malleable for awhile which is nice. I used a clean, wet brush to move the glaze where I wanted it. On the doors I wanted more glaze around the edges and less in the center so I pushed the glaze around until I was happy. I purposely did not clean up the heavy deposits in the groves because I wanted dark patches here and there.

The Finished Product

When the tintable glaze was dry I clear coated the entire project again just to protect the finish and make it as durable as possible. Once it was dry I added the adorable diamond knobs I bought on Amazon. These drawer pulls are like magic. Every project I put them on has sold right away.

I also added a vintage wood carving to the top of my piece for added detail. If you want to add more detail to your pieces try using wood appliques.

You can see what I mean by giving the paint movement. It’s a softer look than solid paint. It’s pretty in my opinion and I think this piece will sell right away!

Angelus Leather Paint Is It Any Good?

I’ve seen Angelus Leather Paint and always wondered if it was any good, so it’s time to try it with a little upcycled fashion project!

Paddy one of my readers asked if I had ever tried acrylic paints on furniture and I had to admit I had not. I have painted furniture with chalk paint (turned out great) and with Simply Spray (I do not recommend). Her question prompted me to finally break down and buy Angelus Leather Paint to give it a try.

Of course when I want to try a product I don’t have a piece of furniture that would work for testing but what I did find was a pair of old worn leather boots. I thought this would be a good substitute. My reasoning being if this paint can stand up to the flexing of a boot without cracking then of course it would stand up to being sat on.

The best part is my daughter has wanted a pair of Junk Gypsy type boots with bright color on them. In particular turquoise and pink, so this project was a way for her to have what she wanted for about $225 less than what buying the JG boots would cost me. When she goes out of shoes every six months I don’t want to make that kind of shoe investment. Maybe after she stops growing but not now.

Angelus Leather Paint

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I opened the Angelus Leather Paint. Was it a dye? Was it a stain? Was it thick like latex? Would it smell? And of course the most important question would it crack?

My first impression when I opened it was good. The consistency was a thin paint. Not too watery but not too thick. One of the best parts for me was that it had no strong odor. I’m scent sensitive so this is always a big concern for me.

I did not use the Angelus Leather preparer since the boots I was painting were very worn and the leather didn’t feel like it had a protective coat on it and it wasn’t slick. The only preparation I did was clean the boots to ensure there wasn’t any loose dirt under the paint. I used a damp cloth for this and then let the boots dry thoroughly.

Immediately on the first coat I was impressed with the coverage. It’s clear that the Angelus leather paint is highly pigmented. The turquoise color was almost a one coat coverage. The only reason I put a second coat of paint over it was the brush marks. You can’t really fault the paint for that. If I was using an airbrush I feel like the paint would have covered the first time.

The lighter colors were a different story. The pink was a three coat coverage because it wasn’t as opaque as the turquoise. The light purple was a two coat coverage. The boots I was painting were medium brown so if I was painting these colors over a black leather I would need more coats to ensure an even coverage.

Artistic License

I did my best to blend the pink and the purple but the leather paint dried quickly. This was a learning process for me. If I were to do this over again I would blend the pink and purple as I went instead of painting one color at a time. Live and learn. I was able to go back over the blends at the end to make the transition from pink to purple look better.

The Finished Appearance

Once the paint was dry to the touch I was impressed how the paint laid down. It’s smooth. There are no brush marks, which I was impressed with because I’m not a neat painter. The paint looks like it self leveled and blended in with the texture of the leather. It doesn’t look like it’s just sitting on top of the paint.

Then it was time for the all important crease test.

It flexed without a sound and when I straightened it out . . . NO CRACKS!

I’m now planning to buy the clear coat for this paint. I didn’t buy it when I bought the kit because if it didn’t work I didn’t want to invest too much. I also ordered the additive they sell so that I can paint on vinyl. I have a heat bonded vinyl seat that I was dreading trying to give a makeover to because I wasn’t sure how I was going to reupholster it. Now I know I’m going to repaint it instead!
