Looking for a creative DIY project that’s both easy and budget-friendly? Whether you’re a fan of beer, soda pop, or vintage collectibles, bottle cap magnets are a charming way to upcycle and create something unique. Here’s how this fun project came to life and how you can make your own.
The Inspiration Behind the Project
This project was born entirely out of inspiration. While browsing Picket Fence Gals in Lindstrom, I stumbled upon a $3 bag of assorted bottle caps. It was a mix of vintage beer and soda pop caps, including Coca-Cola, 7 Up, and some rare local brands. I wasn’t sure what I’d do with them at first, but I couldn’t pass up the deal.

After sitting with the caps for a while, I remembered the button magnets I had tucked away in my DIY stash. That’s when the idea clicked: bottle cap magnets. With collectors frequenting the shop—especially fans of Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper, and Budweiser—I knew these would have the potential to sell.
Using Resin for a Durable Finish
Instead of just gluing the magnets inside the bottle caps, I decided to take a different approach: using resin. Resin is great for creating a strong, permanent bond, but it can be tricky to work with. Mixing Part A and Part B in equal 1:1 portions is crucial. If the ratio is even slightly off, the resin won’t set properly.
I chose my favorite bottle caps, including some with cork backings from a local bottling company. To ensure everything went smoothly, I laid the bottle caps face down on my work surface before mixing the resin. Resin sets up quickly and generates heat as it cures, so you need to work fast.

Step-by-Step Process
1. Prepare Your Materials:
• Bottle caps
• Button magnets
• Resin (Part A and Part B)
• Mixing cups and a stir stick
2. Mix the Resin:
Combine equal parts of Part A and Part B resin in a mixing cup. Stir thoroughly for a smooth, even consistency.
3. Fill the Bottle Caps:
Pour resin into each bottle cap, filling them halfway. Remember, the magnets will displace some resin, so you don’t need to overfill.

4. Embed the Magnets:
Press a button magnet into the resin in each bottle cap. Ensure it’s centered and sits flush with the resin.

5. Let the Resin Cure:
Allow the resin to set and harden completely. This step might take a few hours or overnight, depending on the brand of resin you use.
The Final Results

Thankfully, the resin set perfectly, and the magnets turned out great! I priced each magnet at $3 and placed them in the shop. To my delight, nearly all of them sold quickly—especially the Coca-Cola and 7 Up caps, which were a hit with collectors.
With just a $3 investment in bottle caps, I made my money back and a profit. It’s always rewarding when a creative project works out so well!
