I’m so excited to share this project with you. I’ve tried many upholstery paint methods over the years but most of them left me feeling meh. Until I tried Jacquard Lumiere textile paint. A few years ago I used their Rose Gold paint on my desk chair and the results were incredible. Stunning is a good word for the results.
That’s why when I decided to give my Louis the XVI chair a makeover I turned to Jacquard Lumiere. I knew I would get a quality paint job in the bright colors I wanted (don’t panic for those of you who like muted tones; they have those too).
The Chair

This chair is very special to me. I’ve owned it for over 30 years. It was gift from my husband when we were first married. We were poor as church mice and had a tiny love seat as our only furniture. He knew I wanted beautiful, quality pieces to fill our home but I couldn’t afford them, so one day when he was on his way home from work he spotted this chair at a garage sale and knew I would love it. So he bought it for me.
He was right. I do love the chair. It was water stained and faded even then. I always had the intention of making it pretty again but life is chaotic sometimes and I never found the time. Until now.

First Things First
Of course I wanted to dive right into painting the fabric with the Jacquard Lumiere but first the wood needed to be addressed. Over the years the paint was chipped and had turned yellow. So, I gave it a nice coat of bright flat white paint. You can see the full video on the process of painting the frame HERE.
Once that was done it was on the fun part!
Upholstery Painting
With this kind of chair you need to tape off the wood in order to paint the piping that sits along the edge. I wanted to give it a couple days to make sure the paint was dry and I didn’t pull any of it up, but I was so impatient. So before the frame was taped off I decided to paint the areas inside the piping.

I started with the fabric on the arms of the chair. The Jacquard Lumiere paint is highly pigmented so from the first swipe of paint the color covered. Even the stains magically disappeared.
The first coat was beautiful but there were some spots that needed to be covered and I think it’s the texture of the chair. The fabric grain actually runs at a diagonal, so for the second coat I decided to paint with the grain.

That did the trick. The second coat looks flawless.
The back was of special concern for me because it was upholstered with a plaid material. I was worried that there would be a difference in the coverage for each color.

Thankfully the Jacquard Lumiere paint is highly pigmented. I could tell after the first coat, I had nothing to worry about.

In total the chair took two coats, which was the full 8 oz. of paint. But the results are stunning.
