Are you ready to dive into another Trash to Treasure Idea with these DIY Halloween Potion Bottles! I love crafting for Halloween. This is my season y’all which is surprising since I’m not a very dark person, but I’m drawn to the spooky. I love fall colors and the crispness in the air. When Halloween craft stuff starts appearing at Dollar Tree, I load my cart and sprint to the registers.
Let’s take trash to Treasure with the DIY Halloween Potion Bottles!
But what’s a potion bottle without the right label?
Okay so if you’re creative and you’re good a designing pieces like labels (or you’re really skilled at Canva) then you can probably design your own potion labels. Personally I knew that was going to take me a lot of time that I didn’t want to spend so instead I spent a little money. I found a vendor on Etsy who had already created exactly what I wanted which was vintage looking medicine labels.
I did have to load these into Canva to resize them for my smaller bottles but you do what you have to do. For the larger bottles these were just perfect.
Let’s Find Some Bottles
Here’s where the trash to treasures part of the blog post comes from. I literally scoured my recycling bin for bottles that would work. Since I’m the only one in my house who drinks wine I buy the little bottles instead of a large bottle, which make perfect little potion bottles!
Dollar Tree also had dropper bottles in their craft area that I picked up to make some bottles and one of their larger bottles with the flip top.
I did find some really cool bottles and Michael’s but the price was much more expensive than the options above, but it’s up to you on how much you want to invest into this project. Since I’m selling mine in my booth at Picket Fence Gals, I knew I wanted to keep my costs as low as possible so I can maximize my profits.
Let’s Paint!
This is the fun part! Grab your paints in all your spooky colors. Black is of course a must but purple and orange make great Halloween colors too. I also broke out some of my metallic paints. Get as creative as you want to be with this.
For a couple of the bottles I layered paints. I did a purposefully sloppy job painting the black base coat and then drizzled silver metallic inside the bottle and swirled it around so it would show through where the black had gaps. I also used an ultra-matte charcoal color on some and then used metallic copper and lightly spritzed some onto the bottles.
Because I wanted the look to be old sloppy painting worked in my favor.
Print Your Labels
You can print your labels onto actual label paper if you have it or onto plain paper. Either way I would recommend using decoupage glue to hold the labels in place. I coated the back with decoupage glue and then gave each bottle a nice thick coat over the top of the label to protect it.
You can get creative with your bottle choices, everything from old spaghetti jars to unique liquor bottles from a bar are fair game for this project. The possibilities are endless.
