Wood Appliques for furniture

Using Wood Appliques for Furniture

Posted on April 10, 2021April 14, 2021 by Stacy Verdick Case

Wood appliques for furniture can take a plain piece of home decor and transform it into so much more!

I love wood appliques. Most of the time when I’m out junkin’ the dressers, buffets and cabinets I find are plain Jane pieces. I rarely (if ever) have an ornate piece of furniture come through my doors. But for a few dollars I can level up these pieces and in the end their price tags!

Take this lovely mirror.

Plain Jane Mirror

I was given this mirror by one of my fellow Picket Fence Gals vendors. She had this mirror in her booth for a few months and she said no one even looked twice at it. As you can see she even lowered the price to a dirt cheep $12!

Let’s Add Some Wood Furniture Appliques

As you can see the mirror has detailing at the top but that was it. It’s a little fancy but not fancy enough, I think. So I went to my local Mendards to see what they had for wood appliques for furniture. After searching for 10 minutes and not finding anything I finally asked.

Y’all they looked at me like I had 3 heads. Seriously, they had no idea what I was talking about. I used to live close to a specialty wood shop in the city but now that I’ve moved to the country I miss being able to get whatever I want on a moments notice.

So defeated I went home and browsed Amazon. I shouldn’t be surprised that they had an incredible selection of wood appliques. Everything from Asian to Hollywood Regency. So many that I’ve had to start a wish list for appliques.

In the end I decided on two different scrolls. The scrolls in the image above I decided to use on the base of the mirror and the scrolls in the image below I decided to use on the top of the mirror.

These beautiful wood scrolls will add just the right amount of detail.

To install the wood appliques, I used Loctite construction adhesive. I always keep Loctite handy because it will stick just about anything to anything.

I put several blobs (yes that’s the technical term) in several spots and then spread it out with a popsicle stick. If you don’t have popsicle sticks handy you can use a plastic spoon or knife to spread it out as well.

Placed Wood Appliques

I clamped them in place until they dried. You can see in the photo above that I did drill pilot holes thinking I might need to nail the appliques in place but they were very secure so I just filled the holes with some spackle.

Next I decided to use gold leaf paint to paint the areas of the mirror that I want to show through after I did a little distressing on the mirror. I love the Plaid Gold Leaf One Step paint because it is that shiny gold finish that you can’t replicate with just plain gold paint.

A little extra bling never hurt anything.

Once that was dry I hit it with Rust-Oleum’s Chalked paint in Linen White.

Finished Wood Applique for Furniture

Isn’t it amazing with a little extra detail can do.

It’s in my booth now with a much higher price tag. Fingers crossed that it will sell now!
