Hey there, Junkin’ Buddies!
Halloween season is upon us, and that means it’s time to hunt for spooky treasures! I recently picked up this slightly creepy (but totally cute) black cat candle holder at a garage sale. It had great bones and perfect timing for the season, but it also had one major problem that almost made me pass it by.
Let me show you how a simple fix turned this flawed find into a booth-worthy piece.

The Matte Paint Problem
This little black cat candle holder caught my eye immediately – I mean, who doesn’t love a good Halloween piece? But when I examined it closer, I discovered it was painted with matte paint. And if you’ve worked with matte finishes before, you know exactly what that means.
The telltale signs were all there:
- White scuff marks across the head that wouldn’t budge
- Fingerprints and smudges that seemed permanent
- Overall dingy appearance despite being relatively clean
Any kind of rubbing or contact with matte paint leaves marks that simply won’t come off. For a piece I want to sell, that’s just not acceptable.
Why Matte Finishes Are High-Maintenance Nightmares
Whether we’re talking furniture or ceramics, matte surfaces are the high-maintenance drama queens of the finish world:
- Shows everything: Fingerprints, oil stains, scuff marks – it all shows
- Hard to clean: Regular cleaning methods often make things worse
- Looks worn quickly: What starts pristine becomes shabby-looking fast
- Customer complaints: Nobody wants to buy something that looks damaged
I’ve learned this lesson the hard way with matte-painted furniture pieces. They look beautiful in photos, but in real life? They require constant babying.
The Smoked Glaze Solution
Instead of completely repainting this little guy, I decided to try a smoked glaze technique. Smoked glaze is essentially a dark gray-black glaze that can:
- Cover imperfections and scuff marks
- Change the finish from matte to semi-gloss
- Enhance the overall appearance
- Make future maintenance much easier
The process was surprisingly simple:
- Clean the piece thoroughly – Remove any dirt or debris first
- Apply the smoked glaze – I used a brush to cover all surfaces evenly
- Test a small area first – I always check how it looks before committing
- Use a hair dryer – Speed up the drying process to see results quickly
- Apply to entire piece – Once I confirmed it worked, I glazed everything

The Magic Moment
The transformation was immediate and dramatic. All those stubborn white marks? Gone. The dingy, scuffed appearance? Replaced with a rich, semi-gloss finish that actually looked intentional and professional.
But here’s the best part I discovered: when you look through the hole in the back (remember, it’s a candle holder), the cut-out eyes will glow from the candlelight. How perfect is that for Halloween ambiance?

Semi-Gloss: The Superior Finish Choice
This project reinforced why I prefer semi-gloss or satin finishes over matte:
- Easy to clean: Wipe down with a damp cloth
- Durable: Resists scuffs and marks
- Professional appearance: Looks finished and intentional
- Customer-friendly: Requires minimal maintenance
The piece went from looking like it had “lived a life” to looking fresh and new – exactly what customers want to see.

When Simple Fixes Make All the Difference
This wasn’t a dramatic before-and-after transformation, but it’s exactly the kind of small improvement that separates successful resellers from those who struggle. Sometimes the difference between a piece that sells quickly and one that sits in your booth for months comes down to these details.
Customers can tell when something has been cared for versus when it’s been neglected. They’re willing to pay more for pieces that look pristine and well-maintained.
The Takeaway for Fellow Flippers
Not every garage sale find needs a complete makeover. Sometimes the best projects are the ones that just need a little problem-solving and attention to detail.
When you’re out junking, don’t automatically pass on pieces with minor finish issues. Ask yourself: “Is this something a simple glaze, paint touch-up, or protective coating could fix?”
You might be surprised how many “flawed” finds are actually hidden gems waiting for a quick fix.
