The Top Tools You Need for Furniture Repair

The Top Tools You Need for Furniture Repair

Furniture repair may look difficult, but with the right tools and guidance, it’s a rewarding experience. Start things on the right note by equipping yourself with the essentials. Check out this list of the top tools you need for furniture repair.

Measuring Tools

The first step in furniture repair is to measure and assess the damage. For this task, you need a measuring tape, a ruler, and a level. The measuring tape helps determine the length and width of any split or broken parts. The ruler can measure smaller parts or pieces that need attention. And a level will ensure that the furniture is straight.

Combination Square

A combination square is an essential tool because it helps you measure and mark accurately. In fact, the combination square is one of the top precision measuring tools for woodworking that can improve the outcome of repairs.

You can use a combination square to set saw blades and drill bits accurately, level corners, and even lay out joinery. With a high-quality combination square, you can ensure precise and accurate angled cuts, which are vital for any furniture repair project!

Screwdriver Set

A reliable screwdriver set is a must-have in your toolbox. During the restoration process, you’ll likely have to disassemble and reassemble furniture. Having screwdrivers of different sizes and shapes can accommodate various furniture pieces. For example, you may need a square driver to fix cabinets and a double-hex screwdriver to fasten bolts on coffee tables.

Saw

A saw is another tool you need for furniture repair because it effortlessly cuts and shapes damaged parts. Many types of saws are available, and you should have a few on hand.

If you can only get one saw then go with a jigsaw. It can get most jobs done and the blades are easy to change out if you need a specialty blade for things like metal.

If you have the room in your shop for a compound miter saw then it’s a good investment to make. It will help make your angles as precise as possible and they’re nice to have if you need to nip a few inches off a board quickly.

Wood Glue

No furniture repair project is complete without wood glue. I only use the non-foaming Gorilla Glue wood glue. It not only helps you fix broken furniture parts but also reinforces the structure of the furniture. When using wood glue, ensure you have clamps to hold the furniture pieces in place as the glue dries. Ultimately, the wood glue allows you to achieve a strong bond for long-lasting furniture repairs.

Sandpaper

Sanding may seem tedious, but it’s a necessary step to achieve the desired finish. If you encounter stubborn paint or finishes, go for a coarse grit sandpaper (I recommend an 80 grit) to knock it off with ease.

Then, grab a fine grit sandpaper (a 120 grit will usually do the trick) to create a smooth and silky surface ready for a fresh coat of paint or finish. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing your project come to life after a good sanding session.

You can achieve professional-looking repairs that’ll last for years with the right tools. So take the plunge, and start on your first furniture repair project today!
