From Garden Tool to Easter Centerpiece: A Step-by-Step Guide

Posted on March 26, 2026March 22, 2026 by Stacy Verdick Case

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home with simple, creative touches, and one of my favorite ways to do that is by making an easy DIY spring centerpiece using items you already have. Before you head out to buy anything, take a look around your home. A bowl, a flowerpot, or even a trusty watering can can become the perfect base for a beautiful floral arrangement. This project is all about using what you have, keeping it budget-friendly, and creating something that feels personal and welcoming for the season.

This large watering can had been in use right up until last fall. It got a good scrub down and a makeover.

The watering can before its makeover

Here’s how it’s done!

The secret to using a deep vessel like a watering can for flowers is to fill the base. You can use floral foam but I used a pool noodle that I bought at Dollar Tree. It’s a cheap way to fill that extra room and give a flat surface to place the floral foam on top.

Measure the pool noodle so that it leaves a gap at the top the same depth as the floral foam.

Then use a serrated saw or knife to cut the pool noodle.

I used a coping saw to cut the noodle

I then used my first cut piece to measure the rest of the cuts.

Stuff the noodle pieces into your container as tight as possible. You don’t want them to move. There will be some gaps but don’t worry about those.

place as many noodles in the container as possible to fill it

Place the floral foam over the noodle. You can use a serrated blade to cut the foam into small pieces to fill in all the gaps. This is the layer we’re going to poke the flowers into so you don’t need long stems.

Cover the foam with moss to hide all the magic under the flowers. I used hot glue to glue the moss to the foam. I carefully avoided gluing anything to the watering can so it can be put back into service after Easter.

I placed my bunny figure first. That way I place the flowers around the rabbit and make it look like it was hiding in a garden. If you don’t have a gold bunny figure you can use a foil wrapped chocolate bunny from your Easter basket.

Arrange the flowers around the bunny. I mostly used flowers and green that I already had, but I did grab a couple new stems from the Dollar Tree.

I glued in a few eggs to fill spots around the base of the flowers. Again, I only glued t the moss and the stems of the flowers, carefully avoiding getting any glue on the watering can.

That’s all there is to this project. It took less than an hour to make a cute centerpiece or a porch decoration to greet your guests!

Nestled in next to the bunny is the floral pick that I created on my YouTube channel. You can read the post HERE.

I also made a smaller watering can to go with this one. The process was the same except with a can this small you don’t need the pool noodles. You can see that project below. Again, everything is glued to the foam or the stems of the flowers so everything can be pulled our if I want to use this can again.
