There’s something magical about taking a forgotten piece and giving it a new story—especially when it only costs you 75 cents!
While poking around the thrift store, I found a small wooden tote that looked like someone’s child had made it in one of those Home Depot workshops. It was sweet, a little rough around the edges, and absolutely perfect for a makeover.

Starting with a Stinky Staple: Zinsser B-I-N Primer
First things first—primer. I reached for my trusty Zinsser B-I-N, which is amazing at blocking stains but also smells like it could knock you out. So if you try this at home, work in a well-ventilated area or suit up with a respirator (unlike me in this case—do as I say, not as I do!).

After reinforcing a few rogue nails and smoothing out the surface, it was time to prime.
Choosing Color & Character
Once dry, I chose Irish Garden, a stunning soft blue that I hadn’t used in a while but quickly fell back in love with. This blue just sings on wood—fresh, pretty, and perfect for spring.

While the tote dried, I dug through my stash and found a rub-on transfer with the words “Flower & Garden Seed” from an old seed trade catalog. It was a little big, so I trimmed it down and kept the parts that fit the vibe.

Should I Age It?
Once the final coat of blue was dry and the transfer was on, I debated whether to add a glaze. In the end, I went with a classic brown glaze to give it that aged, been-around-the-garden feel. Instead of wiping it on (which left swipey marks I hated), I pounced it gently with a damp paper towel for a more natural, textured finish.

The Final Touch
With the glaze just right, I stepped back and gave it the final once-over. This little tote went from overlooked to oh-so-charming. All for under a dollar. Honestly, I couldn’t have bought the wood for that price!

It must have been just what this piece needed because I put it in my booth and it sold right away. I’m so glad I grabbed this piece. If I find any more of these kids tote is definitely worth my time to give them a little love so they can find a new future.
