I had the absolute pleasure of joining FOX 9 Good Day to share my favorite tools for fixing up thrift store treasures! If you caught the segment—welcome! And if you’re just getting started on your DIY journey, I’ve got you covered.
These are five of my most-used, beginner-friendly tools for updating vintage furniture and secondhand finds without the mess, stress, or need for a full-blown workshop. Whether it’s wobbly legs, stained fabric, or painting laminate, there’s a fix for that!
Let’s dive in 👇
🖌️ 1. Fabric Paint
Why I Love It:
It’s a game-changer for anyone who’s not ready to reupholster. Fabric paint covers stains, revives color, and gives tired furniture a brand new look—no sewing required.
Pro Tip:
Works best on tight-weave fabrics like canvas or cotton blends. Tape off the wood legs, and you’re good to go!
🛒 Recommended Product:
I love the Lumiere metallics but the Neopaque non-metallic colors are beautiful too. Order directly from Jacquard and get a 20% discount off your first order using coupon code PEONY.
🪑 2. TiteChair or ChairRx

Why I Love It:
Wobbly chairs? Loose joints? This miracle adhesive tightens furniture without needing to take it apart. It expands slightly as it cures, locking everything back into place.
Pro Tip:
After applying, sit on the piece or clamp it tight while it sets.
🛒 Recommended Product:
Check your local retailer for TiteChair or you can purchase on Amazon if your store is sold out. I have not seen ChairRx locally but it is available on Amazon.
🎨 3. Bondz or Adhesion Primers

Why I Love It:
This primer helps paint stick to stubborn surfaces like laminate, veneer, or anything with a slick factory finish. It’s the key to a long-lasting makeover.
Pro Tip:
Let it dry completely before painting, and it’ll hold like a dream.
🛒 Recommended Product:
Bondz primer can be purchased locally or from Amazon.
🧼 4. Liquid Sandpaper (Deglosser)

Why I Love It:
No sanding dust, no mess—just wipe it on to glossy surfaces before painting. Wait a few minutes until a haze developes before painting over the top.
Pro Tip:
Use in a well-ventilated area or wear a respirator—it has strong fumes but gets the job done fast.
🛒 Recommended Product:
Most liquid sandpapers are the same. Klean-strip can be purchased locally or from Amazon.
🖼️ 5. Decoupage Fiber Paper

Why I Love It:
This is one of my favorite ways to add a custom, high-end look to drawer fronts, table tops, or cabinet doors. Unlike regular paper, fiber paper is thick, repositionable, and doesn’t bubble.
Pro Tip:
Seal with a matte or gloss topcoat for a smooth, durable finish.
🛒 Recommended Source:
Re-Design makes a line of fiber paper that is available on Amazon. A quick internet search will turn up other stockists. Just look for the “fiber paper”.
